Prefixes and suffixes are the fastest shortcut to a longer word. Once you recognize one sitting in your
letters, you're no longer solving the whole word at once — just the smaller root in between.
High-Value Prefixes
RE- (redo, rewrite), UN- (undo, unhappy), DIS-
(disagree, dislike), PRE- (preview, prepay), IN-/IM- (inactive,
impossible), and OVER- (overtime, overcook) cover a huge share of everyday English
vocabulary. If your letters include an R, E, and a spare letter or two, check whether RE- unlocks a
word before trying anything else.
High-Value Suffixes
Beyond the verb, noun, and adverb endings covered in
Recognizing Word Patterns, keep an eye out for
-ABLE/-IBLE (readable, flexible), -AL (natural, formal),
-IC (basic, classic), and -ER/-OR (teacher, actor) — all
common ways English turns a root word into something else.
Spotting Them in a Jumble
Because scrambling shuffles letter order, not letter presence, a word that contains a prefix or suffix
still contains all of that pattern's letters somewhere in the pile. Scan your letters for a matching
set (an R, E, and enough leftovers for UN- or RE-) before you start guessing full words outright.
